Medicine for All – Traveling Exhibition on Gender-Sensitive Medicine Kicks Off at Magdeburg University Hospital

25.03.2026 -

From symptoms to treatment: Visitors will learn why women and men develop illnesses differently and require different treatments.

Why do diseases often progress differently in women and men? Why don’t medications work the same way for everyone? And what role do biological differences and social realities play in our health? The traveling exhibition “Gender-Sensitive Medicine” addresses these questions: It will be on display from March 31 to April 25, 2026, in the foyer of Lecture Hall 7 on the campus of Magdeburg University Medical Center. Admission is free.

The exhibition on the Magdeburg Medical Campus aims to raise awareness among both students and staff of the University Medical Center as well as the interested public about the importance of gender-sensitive medicine.

Thirteen large-format posters present findings on gender differences across ten medical topics in a way that is easy to understand. The exhibition highlights that symptoms, disease progression, and treatment outcomes often differ between women and men. For a long time, the male body was considered the norm in medical research and practice. There is now a growing awareness that gender-sensitive medicine is necessary to avoid misdiagnoses and better tailor therapies to patients.

The traveling exhibition was initiated by the German Association of Women Physicians and the German Society for Gender-Specific Medicine. The goal is to make research findings accessible to a broad public and to provide impetus for medicine, science, and education. In addition to biological factors, environmental and living conditions that influence health are also addressed.

Prof. Dr. med. Ute Seeland, Head of the Section for Gender-Sensitive Medicine and Prevention at Magdeburg University Hospital and Chair of the German Society for Gender-Specific Medicine, emphasizes: “This exhibition shows how important a differentiated, gender-sensitive approach to prevention and care is. In the future, we must move away from purely organ-based medicine toward a more systems-biological approach that takes the whole person into account. This will allow us to spare those affected a great deal of suffering.”

Prof. Dr. Daniela Dieterich, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Magdeburg, emphasizes: “The medicine of the future is gender-sensitive. Only by taking gender differences seriously can we optimize diagnostics and therapy for all patients. The traveling exhibition makes an important contribution by imparting knowledge, raising awareness, and demonstrating how gender-sensitive medicine can be implemented in research and practice.”

Prof. Dr. med. Gabriele Kaczmarczyk of the German Association of Women Physicians (Deutscher Ärztinnenbund e.V.) also emphasizes that there remains a significant knowledge gap in medicine regarding gender differences—the so-called gender data gap. “Initiatives such as the Year of Science ‘Women’s Health’, launched by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space, contribute significantly to strengthening research and raising awareness of this topic,” emphasizes Prof. Kaczmarczyk.
